Maths

At our school, Maths is taught through a carefully structured programme (HfL Essential Maths), aligned with the National Curriculum from Reception to Year 2. We focus on developing children’s understanding of mathematical concepts and language through practical, engaging activities.

Children learn key areas of Maths, including:

  • Number and place value

  • Addition and subtraction

  • Multiplication and division

  • Fractions

  • Measurement

  • Geometry

  • Statistics

We believe children learn Maths best through:

Play
Children explore Maths through purposeful play, helping them see its relevance in everyday life.

Practical experiences
Hands-on activities and investigations support children in developing key skills such as counting, measuring, and recognising patterns and shapes.

Speaking and listening
Mathematical language is explicitly taught. Through discussion, children develop vocabulary, explain their thinking, solve problems, and work collaboratively.

Teaching
Lessons have clear objectives and build on prior learning. Key vocabulary is planned and embedded throughout.

Recording
Children record their learning in a variety of ways, including drawings, written work, models, photographs, role play, and charts.
